Why we make one thing

The essential oil aisle is crowded with bottles that share a problem: you cannot tell what is in them. Extraction method unstated. No batch testing. Carrier oil quietly blended in to stretch the volume. Fragrance compounds standing in for the real plant. And a claim on the label that the seller could not defend if anyone asked.

We decided to make one ginger oil and be able to answer every question about it. Ten thousand orders later, that is still the whole strategy.

What that means in practice

• Steam-distilled, single-origin. Pure Zingiber officinale root oil, nothing added.
• GC/MS tested every batch. Independently, not in-house. Send us your batch code and we will send you its certificate.
• Dilution guidance on the bottle. Skin sensitisation is the most common thing that goes wrong with essential oils, and it is almost entirely preventable with a ratio printed where you can see it.
• Amber glass. Because sesquiterpenes degrade in UV light and we would rather your last drop work as well as your first.
• Claims we can source. Read Our Science — including the parts where we tell you the evidence is thin.

About our reviews

We moved to a new e-commerce platform this year. Our order history came across; our review archive did not. So a business with ten thousand orders behind it currently has a product page with almost nothing on it, which is an odd look and worth explaining rather than papering over.

What we won't do

We won't tell you our oil contains gingerol, because steam-distilled ginger essential oil doesn't. We won't cite a clinical trial that studied a capsule and imply it studied our bottle. We won't publish a review we didn't receive.

Those are low bars. A surprising number of companies in this category don't clear them.
